Fr. Herman is a seventh-generation Texan who has been actively involved in ministry nearly his entire life. Growing up in a non-denominational faith, he met his wife Ruth and the two have been involved in youth ministry and worship teams. They were married in 2005 and welcomed their first daughter in 2008. Later in life, he transitioned to serve in a non-profit education ministry where he pursued a B.S. in Sociology (with minors in English and Family & Human Development) from Arizona State University. During his administrative tenure at the school, he and his family found the Orthodox Christian faith and they were baptized and chrismated at St. Paul Orthodox Church in Denison, TX. He was ordained to the Subdiaconate in 2016 at St. Symeon Orthodox Church in Birmingham, AL. After a time of reflection and serving, he answered the call to attend seminary at St. Tikhon's Orthodox Theological Seminary in South Canaan, PA where he was ordained to the Diaconate in May 2019 and received his M.Div. the following year.
After graduation, he was ordained to the Holy Priesthood on Christmas Day 2020 at St. Seraphim Orthodox Cathedral in Dallas, TX. He spent time interning at St. Paul in Denison, St. Sava in Allen, TX, and Holy Nativity in Shreveport, LA. During his internship in Shreveport, he assisted in the establishment of a new Orthodox mission - St. Ephraim Mission - in Longview, TX.
Upon completing his internship, he has gratefully been assigned as the priest-in-charge at St. Catherine Orthodox Church in Columbus, MS. The Garrison family is excited and humbled by the opportunity to serve and proclaim the Gospel in "The Friendly City" and The Golden Triangle.
Fr. Herman enjoys spending time with his wife and four children as they delight in all things outdoors, gardening, raising chickens, and art. He also has a love of writing, music, fishing, automobiles, and cooking.
Raised in the Presbyterian (PCA) church, I converted to Orthodox Christianity when I was a sophomore at Furman University, where I also met my beautiful wife Myra. The Orthodox Christian Fellowship Group (OCF) at Furman, led at that time by Fr. Nikolay Miletkov, was my first exposure to Orthodox theology and "Phronema," and I haven't been able to look away since. After studying chemistry & religion at Furman, I obtained my medical degree from the University of Mississippi, and completed my internal medicine residency at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Originally from South Mississippi, I have lived in Columbus since 2017 when I relocated from New Hampshire to begin practicing medicine. We were blessed to form St. Catherine Orthodox Mission the following year, and its work and growth has been a continuous source of joy for our family ever since!
I grew up in Newnan, Georgia and was raised in the Southern Baptist church. While searching for a deeper understanding of Christianity in college, I met my husband William, who had recently been chrismated into the Orthodox Church. A few years later I was also baptized, and we were married in 2010 at St. Symeon Orthodox Church in Birmingham, AL.
After finishing optometry school I practiced in New Hampshire for several years while William completed his medical residency. We then moved back south and settled in New Hope, MS with our two children, Lyle and Clara. After ten years as an optometrist, I am now a full-time homemaker, spending time with our kids, chickens, and ever expanding garden
Jason Bigelow grew up in Columbus, MS and was baptized and raised in the Southern Baptist tradition. He was educated at Mississippi State University. His early architecture career took him to Jackson, MS, where he met his future wife, Kelsey Rickenbaker. He also befriended Wisdom Yerger, who invited Jason to “her father’s church”, Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church in Clinton, MS. There, Jason and Kelsey were chrismated and married by Father Paul Yerger. The Bigelow daughters, Lizzy (Elizabeth) and Lula Sava were baptized by Father Paul as well. In 2005, Jason’s architecture career took the family to Wilmington, North Carolina, where, encouraged by Father Marcus Burch, and with a few other families, founded Saint Basil the Great Orthodox Church. Upon moving back to Mississippi, the Bigelows worked with the Rosenblatt family to found Saint Catherine Orthodox Church in Columbus. Jason is the University Architect for the University of Alabama, and splits his time between the St. Herman Orthodox Mission in Tuscaloosa, AL and St. Catherine.
My children and I converted to Orthodoxy on February 18, 2018, at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Decatur, Illinois, with Father David Eynon. While I lived in Decatur, Illinois, I was String Area Coordinator and Instructor of Cello at Millikin University.
We moved to Starkville in July 2023 for my current position as Assistant Teaching Professor of Cello, Interim String Area Coordinator, and current coordinator and teacher of the Jacket Strings program in the Starkville-Oktibbeha Public School District.
St. Catherine's Orthodox in Columbus is a warm and welcoming community, and we are so grateful for our new church family here.
